The recent measles outbreak in southern Alberta has health officials ramping up the fear factor as they scramble to set up vaccine clinics. They say measles leads the pack as a vaccine-preventable disease and is the “largest killer of children”.
What they don’t mention is that the measles death rate had declined by almost 100% prior to mass vaccination with MMR vaccine and that it is only in conditions of extreme poverty and malnutrition that measles becomes deadly – especially if aggressively treated with fever suppressing drugs and vitamin A supplementation is not given. The western world overcame those dire conditions decades ago when measles mortality plummeted to an all time low, prior to the introduction of MMR vaccine in Canada in the early 1970’s. Well nourished and healthy children recover easily from measles and gain the benefit of long term natural immunity into adulthood. The disease is far riskier in non-immune adults than in healthy children.
The advent of mass vaccination with the triple live virus MMR vaccine has changed the landscape of the epidemiology of the disease, transforming an ordinary childhood illness into something to be feared. Health officials are running scared now because they know that the vaccine has pushed the disease into the two most vulnerable groups at highest risk from measles, the very young – babies below 1 year, and – adults. These groups were not vulnerable in the pre-vaccine era because the majority of adults had gained lifelong immunity from having had the disease in childhood. And most babies were protected because their mothers (most of whom also had measles in childhood) imparted effective antibodies to their babies, protecting them well in the first year of life.
According to health officials, none of the confirmed measles cases in the Alberta outbreak have been vaccinated with a measles containing vaccine. Single measles virus vaccine is not available in Canada forcing people to submit to the triple live virus MMR vaccine. They’re calling for all children ages 6-12 months and older to be vaccinated. They’re not telling the public that vaccinating too early (under age 15 months) is what led to measles vaccine failure in Quebec recently when over 50% of people who contracted measles had been ‘adequately’ vaccinated.
Health officials say there is no herd immunity in southern Alberta where they estimate only 60% of people have been vaccinated. The term “herd immunity” derives from the observation that in the pre-vaccine era, measles would stop circulating when 68% of the population acquired natural long lasting immunity after recovery from the disease – a far cry from vaccine derived temporary immunity which requires a 98% vaccination rate to prevent circulation of the virus.
Prior to mass vaccination, measles would cycle through every 2 to 3 years, conferring the benefit of enduring immunity on the new crop of children born in between measles outbreaks. Prior to the 1980’s parents were not afraid of measles. They welcomed the disease knowing their children would gain lifelong immunity, something that cannot be achieved with vaccination.
Thanks to the MMR vaccine, access to long lasting and effective natural epidemiology has been dismantled, and health officials go into a major panic when it cycles through the community. They themselves have caused the dilemma. Even in fully vaccinated populations, the disease will continue to break out as was evidenced in the recent Quebec outbreak because the vaccine can never confer the kind of long lasting immunity that recovery from the disease can at the appropriate time of life which is in childhood.
The delusional mindset of those committed to vaccine ideology is well expressed by Dr. Glen Armstrong, head of the University of Calgary’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases. Armstrong, who says, “With the process of vaccinations, we’re not doing anything that is contrary to nature……We’re in fact using our immune system, or educating our immune systems, as nature intended with vaccines so that we can protect ourselves from infectious diseases.” [source article no longer available http://beaconnews.ca/blog/2013/10/measles-vaccine-ignored-in-south-alberta-kids-at-risk/]
There is nothing further from nature than injecting a bolus of live viral particles and foreign DNA into the body in an attempt to artificially force antibody production. Health officials are fearful because they know it is they themselves who have disrupted the natural beneficial epidemiology of the disease. It is they who have deprived the population of true “herd immunity”. The consequence of this manipulation is that we’ll be seeing more and more measles outbreaks as time goes on because of the decline of enduring natural immunity in the population, vaccine failure, and people refusing shots for fear that the side effects of the vaccine are worse than the disease.
In terms of what causes parents to reject MMR vaccine for their children, this important Canadian study documented the number of ER visits following MMR vaccine in children age 12 months and 18 months over a 3 year period. The number of reactions is an eye opener. The study found that 1 in 168 babies vaccinated with MMR ended up in ER and alluded to 5 deaths during the study period. Parents don’t take their children to ER unless they’re REALLY worried. Do they plan to follow up any of these tens of thousands of babies who suffered adverse reactions to MMR vaccine to determine whether they develop other health issues in the months and years to come as a result of adverse vaccine reactions? We don’t know at this point.
A recent article reviewing the epidemiology of measles noted that, “A 2009 study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society investigated what could happen with waning measles vaccine immunity even with high vaccine coverage among children. They predicted that, after a long disease-free period in the population, the introduction of infection will lead to far larger epidemics than predicted by standard models.”
