Procurement Minister Anita Anand said Canada has a deal to buy up to 72 million doses of the experimental vaccine candidate, which is just starting the second of three trial phases this month. In all, Canada has committed $1 billion to buy at least 154 million doses of vaccines from five different companies, and much of that money will not be refunded even if the vaccines never get approved. … Canada has signed deals with Moderna, Pfizer, Novavax, Johnson & Johnson and now Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline, all of which are working on some of the most promising vaccines, but none of which has completed all the required clinical trials, or been approved for use in Canada. On Sept. 3, Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline said their vaccine candidate was going to begin Phase 1/2 trials which will involve tests on 440 individuals. The hope is the vaccine will be ready for the third and final phase of trials by the end of the year, and approved for use in the first half of next year.”

The real Covid crisis – letter to the editor published September 17, 2020 in The Local Weekly
Immediately after the March 18th emergency declaration, people were told to self-isolate and venture out only if absolutely necessary. Never before have healthy people been quarantined – that was reserved only for the sick. This, followed by the directives to be “socially distanced” and to wear masks has disallowed accumulation of herd immunity and allowed the ‘pandemic’ to drag on. As well, the anxiety, fear, and depression created by these measures and the daily Covid press briefings will have lowered immunity to all infections not just Covid-19. The out-of-control opioid crisis; the loss of income giving rise to increases in homelessness, malnutrition and spousal abuse; negative psychological effects on young children; cancellation of much needed surgeries and on and on – these are harming health much more than the virus. As of Sept 3rd, only 209 people (0.0041% of the BC population) were said to have died from Covid-19. Almost all were elderly and no doubt had other health conditions. Now, deaths are down, testing’s ramped up, but the case count is meaningless because the tests aren’t accurate. As for all of us who’ve not succumbed, the worst is yet to come. Starting next year, we’ll have to start paying down the enormous debt our governments have acquired from giving handouts to most sectors of the population and paying for endless supplies of masks, face shields, gowns, ventilators, hand sanitizers, test kits and personnel to do the testing. In 2020, old aged pensioners received a $300 bonus; in 2021 they may not even receive a pension. – Susan Fletcher
