Canadians divided over making COVID-19 vaccine mandatory: Poll – While researchers across the planet race to find a vaccine for COVID-19, a new poll suggests Canadians are divided over whether getting it should be mandatory or voluntary — setting up a potentially prickly public health debate if a vaccine becomes available.  The federal government has committed tens of millions of dollars to help find or create a vaccine for the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, the respiratory illness that has infected at least 48,000 Canadians and killed more than 2,700. Yet the poll conducted by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies found that while 60 per cent of respondents believe people should be required to get the vaccine once it is ready, the other 40 per cent think it should be voluntary.”

Canada’s top doctor warns against relying on herd immunity to reopen economy – Quebec’s premier has touted the method as a way to get his province back to work – “Passports may become necessary, doctor says – For Dr. Kumanan Wilson, a physician at the Ottawa Hospital and innovation adviser at the Bruyère Research Institute, immunity passports will be key to returning to society if the science is there to support it. Wilson is hoping to partner with the federal government to launch a digital identification system that shows who is protected from the virus should immunity tests become available. ‘It is possible that the science doesn’t demonstrate that you do develop long-lasting immunity, in which case [passports] would not be an appropriate way to proceed,’ Wilson said. ‘But if the science does demonstrate that this is a good solution, it will be important to have a technological solution in place.’ Wilson has proposed a system that would arm Canadians, or people around the world, with a digital record of their level of protection, which would be scanned to enter workplaces, sports stadiums and airports. He acknowledged that classifying people based on protection status could lead to other concerns, such as some citizens having better access to immunity tests than others, or those compelled to falsify their status to re-enter society.” – Includes radio interview
COVID-19 recovery plan for N.B. begins with 2-household ‘bubbles’ but mass gatherings may wait a year – Province marks 6th straight day with no new cases of virus, but bars and sports may need to wait for vaccine – “There won’t be any concerts or festivals for at least the rest of the year, Higgs said, and bars and organized sports may not be able to start up again until a vaccine is available, which could take 12 to 18 months.”

Ontario takes ‘extraordinary step’ to give police list of all COVID-19 patients – “A civil liberties group is raising concerns after the Ontario government took the ‘extraordinary step’ to release a database to police with a list of everyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the province.  On April 6, the province announced they would provide first responders with the names, date of birth and address of all patients who tested positive for the virus. … ‘Last week, we started to see the first indications that police had actually been given access to this information but we don’t know exactly how it is working,’ Abby Deshma, the director of the criminal justice program at CCLA [Canadian Civil Liberties Association], said. ‘Sharing personal health information with first responders is an extraordinary step. It needs to be extremely clear what the use for the information is, why it’s necessary and how this is legal.’”

Too early to discuss ‘immunity passports’ for COVID-19 recoveries, Trudeau says – “But Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, warned against that approach Saturday. She said the federal government has put in place an immunity task force that will investigate how people’s immune systems are responding to COVID-19. She said that since many Canadians have followed physical distancing orders, the percentage of the immunized population is “quite low.” And despite evidence that the virus is particularly dangerous to older people and those with underlying health conditions, younger people are still at risk. ‘So the idea of generating natural immunity is actually not something that I think should be undertaken,” she said. “I personally think that as medical officers, we would be extremely cautious about that kind of approach.'”

Two Bakersfield doctors cite their testing data to urge reopening – “Before COVID-19 was even detected in the United States, Dan Erickson, a former emergency room physician who now co-owns Accelerated Urgent Care in Bakersfield, bought as many tests for the virus as he could. He knew it would be here eventually and wanted to be ready to test those who needed and wanted it. Now, after testing thousands of people, he and his business partner, physician Artin Massihi, say they have enough data to draw some conclusions about COVID-19. … ‘If you’re going to dance on someone’s constitutional rights you better have a good reason, you better have a really good reason, not just a theory,’ he said. ‘The data is showing us it’s time to lift (the stay-at-home orders) so if we don’t lift, what is the reason?”

Ottawa announces $1.1B in new funding for the fight against the coronavirus – “Ottawa is spending an additional $1.1 billion for a national medical and research strategy in the fight against the coronavirus. The money will be allocated to three pillars which include research on vaccines and other treatments, support for clinical trials, and expanding national testing and modelling. Hospitals and universities get $115 million for vaccine and treatment research. Clinical trial funding for vaccines is $662 million. ‘A vaccine is the long-term solution to this virus,’ said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during his daily COVID-19 address.”
‘Significant’ coronavirus mutation discovered, could make vaccine search ‘futile,’ study says – “Researchers have discovered what they described as a ‘significant’ mutation of the novel coronavirus, which they believe ‘raises the alarm’ that the search for a vaccine could become “futile” down the line. The study, published on the biorxiv.org repository, notes researchers were able to analyze a sample of SARS-CoV-2 from India on January 27 and found a mutation that ‘leads to weaker receptor binding capability.’ The receptor, known as ACE2, is an enzyme in a person’s lungs.”
Coronavirus: First patients injected in UK vaccine trial – BBC – “Half will receive the Covid-19 vaccine, and half a control vaccine which protects against meningitis but not coronavirus. Coronavirus: Premier Legault pitches idea of herd immunity – Montreal Gazette – “’When we better understand the concept of natural immunization, the idea of gradually reopening (Quebec) becomes less scary,’ Legault said. ‘It even becomes desirable.’  Noting a vaccine against the virus could be a year or two away, he said it’s not realistic to think Quebec can spend all that time locked down. The worse thing Quebec could do is allow everyone out from confinement in bulk in September, he said. The idea is to go slowly and let people less at risk develop antibodies. ‘If we did a big poll or a referendum, I doubt Quebecers would feel like (staying confined) for two years because it could be that long before we have a vaccine,’ Legault said. ‘So we need natural immunization, but gradually … at the same time as protecting the most vulnerable.’”
Doctors provide differing opinion on shelter-in-place order, say county should reopen – “Now, two doctors in Kern County are sharing a differing opinion. They say sheltering in place is doing more harm than good. Doctors Dan Erickson and Artin Massihi of Accelerated Urgent Care refuse to wear masks outside. They say the longer people stay inside, the more their immune system drops. They’re calling for Kern County to reopen immediately. ‘If you have no symptoms, you should be able to return to work,’ Erickson said Wednesday. ‘Are you an asymptomatic viral shedder? Maybe. But we can’t test all of humanity … the major events, the sporting events, these are nonessential. Let’s get back to those slowly. Let’s start with schools.'”

He commented on the current social distancing and stay-at-home measures occurring across the country, saying we’ll have a lot of unusual measures in place until ‘we get the world vaccinated,’ adding, ‘that’s a tall order, but it’s where we need to get to.’”

The decade of transformation is here; remaking health care  “We’ve been writing for a while that the 2020’s would be a decade when multiple crises would come to a head and we would have an opportunity for major transformations if we were organized to mobilize and demand them. The current coronavirus pandemic, economic collapse, and falling oil prices are three events that are creating such opportunities. Each crisis shows the glaring shortcomings of healthcare, economic and environmental policies that are failing the people and planet. Nobody could have predicted that the crises would happen so quickly, but here we are.”

Herd immunity might still be crucial in the fight against coronavirus – If there was a way to safely grant two-thirds of a society COVID-19 immunity, the pandemic would stop – “I am a critical care physician and assistant professor of medicine in Canada, and have spent weeks obsessively consuming COVID-19 medical literature. Ultimately, I see only one way to navigate society through this pandemic with neither apocalyptic death rates nor economic devastation. To my surprise, the conclusion I have reached seems very similar to the ‘back to work’ plan the Trump administration floated on Tuesday.”
LISTEN: CBC Radio cuts off expert when he questions Covid19 narrative“Dr Joel Kettner phoned into the March 15th episode of CBC’s Cross Country Checkup podcast to discuss the Canadian (and international) reaction to the Covid19 pandemic. He was in the middle of making a point about statistics when the host abruptly cut him off. While the two invited guests were very much taking the governmental line on the threat of Covid19, Dr Kettner was striking a different tone.  To be clear, Dr Kettner is not a fringe or controversial character. He is professor of Community Health Sciences and Surgery at Manitoba University, former Chief Public Health Officer for Manitoba province and Medical Director of the International Centre for Infectious Diseases.”
