Dear VCC Community
“It would be easy to conclude that the war is over” writes Daniel Habas in an essay in Blindsight is 2020. “Apart from the occasional masked passer-by and unused hand sanitizers, the regime’s symbols have vanished from view.” And yet, Habas continues, the Covid response was more than just about COVID. It was “a political, even spiritual project.” It was about what people were willing to give up to feel safe. It was about what they considered essential and disposable in life.
What became exposed during COVID was just how little most of humanity values freedom. If anything, freedom has become an unacceptable word, associated with being selfish, not caring, anti-science, and anti-authoritarian. It seems humanity took its freedom so for granted that it held no value. We never gave it a second thought. It is only in the loss of freedom that we’ve discovered its value. And, maybe, this is the entire point of the COVID era – to remind humanity of the value of freedom and to develop the strength to stand up and protect it.
I honour all those who held fast to the importance of freedom, knowing that without freedom, life is an open prison. Those of us in the freedom movement would rather be lions in the wild, with all the risks associated with it, than penned in a cage, however safe it may be. This is the time to declare what we value, what kind of society we want to live in, and how much we want governments directing our lives. I’m fine with others masking, distancing, injecting, and staying home. Just don’t expect me to do the same. And leave my children alone.
This is why the war is not over, and will never be over. We need to be ever vigilant in protecting our freedom.
