Dear VCC Community,
A colleague that I haven’t spoken with in more than two years reached out this week. When we last spoke and I explained the work I was doing for VCC in protecting our right to informed consent, he responded with – “I can’t go there with you. I follow the science.” Given this was our last encounter, I entered the conversation with trepidation.
While no apology was issued, he did acknowledge that I must be disappointed with the lack of support of my colleagues. He also acknowledged that the world has become very divided over the last two years. He recalled his experience in visiting places in recent history where genocides and mass murder against former friends and neighbours have occurred – Cambodia, Rwanda, and Auschwitz. He sees the similarities to today.
We talked about evil and the fall of humanity during these last years. And while the conversation was dark and disturbing, he ended on a hopeful note. He said – “I subscribe to the idea that humanity is like rough rocks that become polished by the friction between us. I believe these past three years are part of humanity’s transformation.”
On that we agree. I too see signs of hope, of transformation, and of deepening wisdom. This renewed relationship is but one example of that. They say it is darkest before the dawn. Stay hopeful! Stay positive! Shine your light! Truth will prevail!
