Determinants of Autism (Apr 15/25)
This keynote presentation by Dr. McCullough at the Autism Health Summit in San Diego, on April 11, 2025 is dedicated to the determinants or risk factors for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Since this increasingly prevalent neuropsychiatric condition has a broad range of features and is a clinical diagnosis, it is subject to tremendous variability with respect to historical predisposing and environmental exposures. Because of this complexity, it is inappropriate to say that any single factor is the “exclusive cause” of ASD. It is better to discuss relevant determinants as risk factors. Much like we talk about coronary atherosclerosis, which also does not have a single cause.

One in 36 (2.8%) 8-year-old children — 4% of boys and 1% of girls — have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), based on an analysis of data from 2020, published today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“The latest findings, reported in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, show an increase from the last report, which found 1 in 44 8-year-olds (2.3%) had autism in 2018. Since the CDC started collecting the data, prevalence estimates have skyrocketed from 1 in 150 in 2000, to today’s estimate of 1 in 36 children. The trend has persisted for decades. Autism prevalence in the 1990s, which was 1 in 1,000 children, already represented a tenfold increase over the condition’s estimated prevalence in the 1970s.Today’s new report from the CDC’s ADDM [Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring] Network places the latest ASD rate at 1 in 36 children born in 2012, but that’s not even the largest number out there (a recent survey using NHIS data reported a rate of 1 in 29 children in 2020).”

April is World Autism Month, prompting key public health figures and prominent media outlets to celebrate autistic children and focus on the importance of inclusivity. But missing from that conversation, experts say, is a discussion of how autism can be prevented.
Polly Tommey, co-producer of, Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe, and CHD.TV programming manager, told The Defender: “Autism Speaks never addresses the core issues with the majority of children diagnosed with autism. Why the Claim ‘Vaccines Don’t Cause Autism’ Is Disinformation (December 2/2022) –
The hypothesis that vaccinating children according to the CDC’s schedule can contribute to the development of autism in susceptible children has not been falsified.
“Vaccines do not cause autism.” That is what we are continually told by government health officials, the mainstream media, and the pharma-centric medical establishment. It is the official position of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The idea that vaccines can cause autism is just misinformation spread by “anti-vaxxers”, we are told; it is a claim that has been repeatedly debunked by scientific research.
The Environmental and Genetic Causes of Autism (Nov 29, 2016) delves deep into the full body of past and current research to reveal how genetic predispositions and environmental factors can combine to produce the conditions autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

In a federal lawsuit, filed by ICAN, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has failed to produce scientific studies that back up its long-declared assertion that vaccines given to babies (<1 year) do not cause autism.
The CDC claims on its website that “Vaccines Do Not Cause Autism.” Despite this claim, studies have found between 40% and 70% of parents with an autistic child continue to blame vaccines for their child’s autism, typically pointing to vaccines given during the first six months of life.

Andrew Wakefield MB.BS., is an academic gastroenterologist. He received his medical degree from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London in 1981. He qualified as Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1985 and trained as a gastrointestinal surgeon with a particular interest in inflammatory bowel disease. He was awarded a Wellcome Trust Traveling Fellowship to study small-intestinal transplantation in Toronto. He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in the U.K. in 2001. Wakefield has published over 140 original scientific papers, reviews, and book chapters.
In 1995, as an academic physician working in a London teaching hospital, he was contacted by the parent of an autistic child with stomach issues. He soon learned from several other parents with autistic behaviors, that their children’s regressive behavior immediately followed an MMR vaccine.
He started investigating a possible role between gastrointestinal issues, the MMR vaccine, and neurological injury in children. In pursuit of this possible link, Dr. Wakefield participated in a study of twelve children with both stomach and developmental issues. The ensuing report, written with twelve other authors would catapult Wakefield into becoming one of the most controversial figures in the history of Medicine.

For the last 20 years I have had to watch the suffering of those affected by autism as the problem multiples year on year. what started with hope for a new understanding, new and effective treatments, and even prevention, turned to despair as special interests exploited their influence over the media to crush the science and scientists. And then, two decades and a million damaged children later, one man Dr. William Thompson - 1 CDC insider - decided to tell the truth and the embers of that early hope glow once more.
Several years ago I decided that to take on the media you had to become the media . The best medium for this story is film. Our aim with this movie was to take this complex, high-level fraud and to give it context, and wear through it the tragic street-level narratives of ordinary families affected by autism.
This film bring to the public dark and uncomfortable truth. To ignore it would be most unwise.
