Dear VCC Community,
I’ve just returned from the National Citizens Inquiry (NCI) hearings in High River, Alberta. We had some pretty sobering conversations over these last three days. The testimony had me thinking about the phrase - “Unless we change our direction, we’re going to end up where we’re headed.”
We came to High River with two questions: Are Farmers Safe in Canada? and Is Our Food Safe in Canada? I think the answer to that question is that none of us are safe at this moment given the direction and the priorities of our governments, corporations and institutions.
We heard considerable testimony on the challenges faced by farmers – bureaucratic overreach, lack of transparency and accountability, dismissal of generational farming wisdom, and control structures that put the profession at risk. There is a dramatic decline in the number of farms in this country due to the inability of farmers to earn a decent living and to be financially stable. The next generation is increasingly unwilling to embrace farming. This results in an aging population of farmers that is not sustainable. This is a serious concern because without farmers, we don’t have food.
We also received testimony on the second question: Is our food safe in Canada?
We heard compelling evidence that while we may have an increase in the volume of the production of food, the actual nutritional value of that food is diminishing at a rapid rate. And we’re seeing the results of that diminishment of nutritional value in our declining physical, emotional and psychological health. David Stephan shared the experience with his family and the results of their research which confirmed the relationship between poor nutrition and mental health issues. Our children are overfed and under nourished and are suffering as a result. More than 50% of children today have one or more chronic health conditions.
In his testimony, John Graff explained that we are what we eat, drink and breathe. This is also true for the animals we consume. They too are what they eat, drink and breathe. The depleted soil and feed, and poisoned air and water, means our animals are no longer healthy. I wonder how much of the illness in the livestock population is not a result of the spread of diseases but a consequence of poor nutrition. But rather than address the nutrition deficit, the strategy is to invent more vaccines, cull the livestock, or invest in producing synthetic food.
Commissioner Gircys asked a very interesting question: Is this by design, or is it mismanagement? I suggest that it is both and regardless, the outcome is the same.
We need a major course correction.
I don’t know anywhere other than at the National Citizens Inquiry where these kind of conversations are happening. Almost 1,000 individuals were invited to attend these hearings on behalf of government and public institutions such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Every seat that was reserved for them was empty. It’s difficult to have confidence that our governments and the institutions we trust to address these issues will make better decisions when their participation in these conversations is zero.
There are many reasons to be discourage and concerned. And we should be concerned. I don’t think we should allow ourselves to be placated by mantras of “safe and effective” and “trust the science.” Our institutions seem to be more interested in building control structures than they are in building the health of Canadians, the health of our livestock, and the health of our food supply.
What does give me hope are the conversations we had with farmers, researchers, and with citizens. Their passion is infectious. Their commitment, dedication, and persistence is inspiring. The wisdom that we heard shared during the hearings gives hope that there are enough smart people who will keep speaking out and helping us to find the answers.
But it means that many more people need to know what we’ve learned over these last three days. And I suspect that what we’ve received is a fragment of the information that we need to make better decisions. But I also suspect that we probably know more than most Canadian Food Inspection Agency officers at this point.
I believe that we are the best hope for a solution.
The empty chairs of those who claim to represent Canadians does not diminish our record and impact. Rather, the empty chairs explain why we must continue to build the record.
We must continue because the truth matters.
